Streets of Galway come alive with huge alfresco sing-song to Galway Girl

IRISH people are known worldwide for our ability to get a good sing-song started but the good people of County Galway staged the mother of all sing songs.

Galway is in contention to become European Capital of Culture in 2020 (Cork held the title in back in 2005) and they are pulling out all the stops to prove what a good host they could be.

Thousands of passers-by, musicians and dancers gathered in Galway city centre to join in a group sing-along to the unofficial county anthem, Galway Girl.

The song was written by not an Irishman, but by lauded Nashville songwriter and rocker Steve Earle.

It was recorded with much-loved Irish musician and accordion maestro Sharon Shannon, and featured on Earle's 2000 album Transcendental Blues.

Later, Irish singer-songwriter Mundy and Shannon teamed up to record a new cover, and it became a huge hit all over again.

In 2008, it was the most downloaded song in Ireland, and went on to become the eighth highest selling single in Irish chart history.
