Sony announces plans for PlayStation Classic console

Sony has unveiled plans for the PlayStation Classic, a scaled-down, souped-up, version of the popular 90s console.

First released back in December 1994, the original PlayStation shipped 100 million units in nine years and six months, establishing Sony as a major force in the video game market in the process.

Now Sony is going back to where it all began with a new, smaller, version of the console that comes with 20 of the consoles most popular games built in.

Though details on the titles set to be included remain scarce, Sony has confirmed five of the titles set to be included.

They include Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.

The new look PlayStation Classic is being released in the US, Canada, Europe, Japan, and Australia on December 3rd and is sure to be in demand over Christmas.

Sony's move into the retro gaming market comes off the back of Nintendo's success with the NES Mini and SNES Mini.

The 8-bit and 16-bit consoles were re-released in scaled-down form along with some of their most popular games built in.

In a surprising move, the PlayStation Classic doesn't include an AC adaptor, with the only power outlet coming via a USB cable included in the package.

Thankfully, the PlayStation Classic does two original PS1 controllers along with an HDMI cable.

The PlayStation Classic is priced at €99.99 and is already available to pre-order on Amazon.

There's no word yet on whether the console will feature Tomb Raider Chronicles, one of the few PlayStation games to be set (partly) in Ireland, but we're not holding our breath.
