Sinead O'Connor apologises for saying white people are 'disgusting'

SINEAD O’CONNOR has apologised for previous remarks in which she branded white people “disgusting”.

The singer, who goes by the name Shuhada Sadaqat, made the remarks last November, around the same time she converted to Islam.

She has now gone on the record to apologise for the comments, which she branded “crazy tweets” posted online during a difficult time in her life.

Writing on Twitter, the Nothing Compares 2 U star said she had been "angry and unwell" when she first made the comments.

"As regards to remarks I made while angry and unwell, about white people... they were not true at the time and they are not true now,” she wrote.

"I was triggered as a result of islamophobia dumped on me. I apologize for hurt caused. That was one of many crazy tweets lord knows."

The comments came as a direct response to the reactions her conversion to Islam sparked.

"I’m terribly sorry. What I’m about to say is something so racist I never thought my soul could ever feel it," she wrote at the time.

"But truly I never wanna spend time with white people again (if that’s what non-muslims are called). Not for one moment, for any reason. They are disgusting."

The apology comes ahead of a first Irish tour in five years and two days after an appearance on The Late Late Show.

The Irish favourite performed two songs on the late-night chat series including Rainy Night in Soho and a stunning rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U.

She dedicated the latter of the two performances to Prince, who wrote the original song.

O’Connor endured a famously fractious relationship with Prince, which she detailed in a previous interview, along with her ongoing spat with Madonna.
