A SHARK was caught on camera this weekend basking in the balmy lagoons of… Waterford.
Posted on Reddit by u/traboys95, the 18 second video shows a relaxed looking shark calmly traversing the waters of Waterford’s Boatstrand Harbour near Tramore.
A beauty of a shark checking out the waters in Waterford this bank holiday weekend from r/ireland
There was some debate in the comments section about the species of shark but the general consensus seems to be that it is a Spiny Dogfish, a relatively small, safe, fish-eating species of shark that is not seen as a threat to humans as their average size is only between 70-100 centimetres.
That said, some people admitted they would not like to have the shark swimming alongside them in the water, and others suggested putting the universally famous Jaws theme over the video.
While not dangerous to humans, Dogfish are not popular with fishermen due to their habit of chewing through fishing nets to get to the fish trapped inside-- and subsequently accidentally freeing all the fish it doesn't get to eat.
Understandable that fishermen are annoyed by them, but we think we'd rather a Spiny Dogfish than a Great White.
The shark may have come to Waterford to celebrate Spraoi festival, which takes place in the city on the August Bank Holiday every year.
He must be snapping that he missed it.
