Rocky Ros Muc: One man's journey from the West of Ireland to the US criminal underworld of Whitey Bulger

AN award-winning documentary detailing the life and boxing career of Irish boxer Seán Mannion has its London premiere tonight.

Rocky Ros Muc is showing at the London Irish Centre in Camden Square tonight, April 12 at 7pm.

This unique film reflects on Seán’s life and boxing career, the ups and downs of both. It is a story of survival, determination, honour and strength.

Like many before him, Seán left behind his home village of Ros Muc and headed for a new life in America.

He had a talent for boxing. His sparring partners at his gym were at the heart of Whitey Bulger’s Winter Hill gang. Friends. Fellow emigrants.

His world was their world. The fighting Irish. Drugs, racketeering and murder.

This was the reality of life in South Boston. Already proving his raw boxing talent as a junior champion of a national title, Séan went on to challenge a world title crown in the US.

Rocky Ros Muc covers Seán’s journey from the quiet Gaeltacht village of Ros Muc in Co. Galway, to the criminal underworld of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger and the mean streets of Boston, this gritty yet heart-warming film examines the man’s spirit inside the ring and his troubles outside.

Legendary boxing trainer and Muhammad Ali’s Corner man Angelo Dundee said that the two best chins in boxing belonged to Muhammad Ali and Seán Mannion.

To the Irish emigrant community in America and abroad, Seán Mannion was the Irish speaking labourer with boxing skills so brilliant he became the No. 1 ranked junior middleweight in the world in the 1980s.

Seán Mannion himself will be in attendance at this special event and will be joined by the director Michael Fanning for a special Q&A after the screening to reflect on his epic boxing achievements.

The documentary won Best Documentary at the 2017 Irish Film Festival, Boston and Best Irish Feature Documentary at the 2017 Galway Film Festival.

Rocky Ros Muc is a Below The Radar production made in association with TG4, The Irish Film Board, Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish-Language Broadcast Fund, the BAI and BBC Alba.
