Riverdance celebrates 20 year anniversary

TWENTY years ago today, Riverdance wowed audiences as the interval act during the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest.

TV viewers across Europe were treated to the graceful elegance of Jean Butler and the explosive arrival of Michael Flatley, and were also treated to the haunting vocals of Anúna.

The occasion marked the first performance of what became one of the most successful stage shows of all time, recording 25 million audience members to date and showcasing Irish dance and music worldwide.

A long line of Irish dancers also joined Butler and Flatley on stage in the then Point Theatre, whilst the votes were being counted across the continent, beating the stage in perfect harmony.

The production became a global sensation and has since performed sell-out gigs in Beijing’s Capital Arena Stadium and in Shanghai’s Grand Stage Arena.

The performance for Eurovision 1994 was presented by RTÉ, created and produced by Moya Doherty, with music by Bill Whelan, choreography by Michael Flatley and Jean Butler and staging by Mavis Ascot.

Riverdance is looking for people to share their memories about that night at #riverdance20 or on www.riverdance.com

The show is set to return to the Gaiety Theatre this summer from 23 June to 31 August 2014.
