Rea stars alongside Gyllenhaal in BBC's The Honourable Woman

IRISH actor Stephen Rea will star alongside Maggie Gyllenhaal and Janet McTeer in BBC Two’s new thriller The Honourable Woman, when the series begins on Thursday evening.

The seven-part series is described by the BBC as a “fast paced, labyrinthine thriller set against an international political backdrop,” of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Belfast native Rea will play an MI6 spy who is about to retire, while McTeer has been cast as the boss of MI6.

Gyllenhaal will play Nessa Stein, the daughter of an arms dealer who emerges into a successful businesswoman.

The first episode will follow Gyllenhaal’s character as she is ‘thrown head-first into a game of political cat-and-mouse when a Palestinian businessman with close connections to her family's empire is killed.’

The series is written and directed by Hugo Blick (The Shadow Line).

The Honourable Woman airs weekly on Thursday at 9pm on BBC Two – the first episode will air at 9pm on Thursday 3 July
