Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy announces new role as BBC Radio 6 Music DJ

CILLIAN MURPHY has revealed he is set to join BBC Radio 6 Music as a DJ for a run of shows next month.

The Irish actor, who began his career performing as a rock musician, said he was "chuffed" to announce his new venture into radio.

The 42-year-old will take over Guy Garvey's slot on Sunday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm while the Elbow frontman finishes work on the Mancunian band's next album.

Announcing the news on Friday, Murphy said: "As a music lover, mixtape obsessive and long-time 6 Music fan I couldn't be more chuffed to be asked to sit in for Guy on his hiatus.

"His show has been a constant companion for me and my family on Sunday afternoons for many years now, and it will be an honour to pick the tunes in that slot for a while".

The Peaky Blinders star added: "6 Music is the best radio station in the world and I look forward to becoming a temporary houseguest!"

Praising Murphy's talents, Garvey joked he would have to "watch his back" while the Cork native fills in for him on the airwaves.

"I am taking a couple of months off to concentrate on the final stages of Elbow's next record," Garvey said.

"Murphy is a bit too good actually, I've heard him before and he knows his onions. I obviously have to watch my back, but he's nowhere near as good looking as me so I'll win on that front."

The news comes ahead of the fifth series of Peaky Blinders, which is set to premiere on BBC One later this year.
