Peaky Blinders creator reveals key plot details for season 5 and film plans

PEAKY BLINDERS creator Steven Knight has offer up a sneak preview of what fans can expect from the upcoming fifth season of the show.

Speaking to loaded in an interview to promote his new film Serenity, Knight revealed that the new series is set in 1929 around the time of the Wall Street Crash.

It’s a turn of events that will apparently have dire consequences for Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby and the rest of the Shelby clan.

Tommy will be facing off against an intriguing foe too, with Knight confirming that the Birmingham-based gangster clan could be facing off against the emerging fascist forces of the time.

"It starts in 1929, at the time of the Wall Street Crash," Knight said.

"So that has a massive consequence for the Shelby family and a lot of their legitimate businesses fall apart.

"Tommy is now an MP and it’s around this time in 1930 that the first stirrings of fascism are happening in the House of Commons and across the country.

"So, the question is: how does Tommy Sherby react?"

Sam Claflin has joined the series in an as yet unspecified role, with many tipping the rising British star to play the season’s primary antagonist.

Could Knight be lining him up to play a fictional reimagining of Oswald Mosley or a similar character? It seems as though fans will have to wait to find out.

In the meantime, Knight also updated viewers on his plans for the show and a potential spin-off movie.

"Well, it’s like the way all the things to do with Peaky Blinders is decided.

"When we were shooting season four, we were standing around Charlie’s Yard in between takes and there’s me and one of the executive producers and Cillian Murphy and we’re saying: 'God this is going really well. Shall we do some more?'

"Because we were going to stop after five series.

"So, we were just like ‘Shall we do some more?’ and it was just like ‘yeah’  With the film it’s a conversation we have every now and again.

"I don’t want to let this go because it’s such a phenomenon so when we get to the end of season 7 we will talk about it then. I certainly wouldn’t rule it out."

Serenity is out in cinemas in the UK and Ireland on March 1st.
