The Oscars' Biggest Losers: 9 global superstars who have never won an Academy Award

THIS WEEKEND, Irish actress Saoirse Ronan left the 2020 Academy Awards empty handed for the fourth time-- which anyone who witnessed her in Greta Gertwig's Little Women will say is a travesty.

Bur the Dublin native isn't the only actor who has been given hope before having it taken away-- again, and again, and again.

The biggest example of this is Leonardo DiCaprio, whose Oscar disappointments eventually turned into something of a running gag...

until he finally won the award for Best Actor for the 2016 film The Revenant.

But the same can't be said for these celebrities, who, despite in many cases having been nominated multiple times, have yet to clinch the Oscars Glory.

Saoirse missed out on the award for Best Actress this time around, but she has also faced disappointment three previous times-- for Lady BirdBrooklyn and Atonement.

2 Glenn Close

Proof that a lack of awards does not indicate a lack of talent: veteran actress Glenn Close, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest actresses of her generation, has been nominated for seven Academy Awards and has yet to win a single one.

3 Amy Adams

Known for her roles in popular films such as American HustleArrival and Nocturnal Animals, Amy Adams has been nominated 6 times but keeps leaving empty handed.

4 Johnny Depp

It might surprise people that Johnny Depp, a favourite among both the mainstream and cult following alike, has never won an Oscar, but it might surprise you even more to hear he's only been nominated 3 times: for Sweeney ToddFinding Neverland and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Believe it or not, this global superstar, whose career has spanned over 50 years, has only been nominated for one Academy Award-- as Best Supporting Actor in Pulp Fiction, way back in 1995.

Thou Shalt Not Pass!...the judges to receive your well-deserved Academy Award. Ian McKellan has been nominated twice, for Gods and Monsters and The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

8 Jim Carrey

Okay, maybe not surprising seeing as how the Academy Awards tend not to hand out Oscars to comedy movies-- but Carrey wasn't even nominated for critically acclaimed films such as The Truman Show or The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

9 Sigourney Weaver

Not only did the former global superstar fail to win any of the three nominations she clinched at the peak of her career, Sigourney Weaver has not even been nominated for a single Academy Award since the 1980's.
