Netflix announce actress cast to play Princess Diana on The Crown

THE ACTRESS playing Princess Diana in the upcoming series of The Crown has been revealed.

23-year-old newcomer Emma Corrin has bagged the coveted role of the People’s Princess in the third and fourth series of the hit Netflix series.

A fictionalised account of the real-life trials and tribulations of the Royal Family, the series has proven popular with fans in the UK and abroad.

The first two series of the drama have covered the years between Queen Elizabeth II’s marriage to Prince Phillip, and the birth of Prince Edward in 1964.

Claire Foy played the Queen over the course of those two seasons with Oscar winner Olivia Colman stepping into the role for series three and four.

"Emma is a brilliant talent who immediately captivated us when she came in for the part of Diana Spencer,"The Crown creator Peter Morgan said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

"As well as having the innocence and beauty of a young Diana, she also has, in abundance, the range and complexity to portray an extraordinary woman who went from anonymous teenager to becoming the most iconic woman of her generation."

"Beyond excited and honored to be joining The Crown for its fourth season,"Corrin told THR.

"I have been glued to the show since the first episode and to think I’m now joining this incredibly talented acting family is just surreal. Princess Diana was an icon, and her effect on the world remains profound and inspiring.

"To be given the chance to explore her through Peter Morgan’s writing is the most exceptional opportunity, and I will strive to do her justice!"

Born in Kent, Corrin studied English and Drama at University and has been tipped as a young star to watch over the coming years.

Other notable new additions to the cast include Helena Bonham-Carter and Princess Margaret and Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher.
