Mrs Brown's Boys tops box office and returns for 2015 UK arena tour

Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie has topped the UK box office on its opening weekend, taking an overall £4.3m.

The film adaptation of the hit BBC series Mrs Brown’s Boys is also on track to become the biggest Irish film to date.

Last weekend’s opening of the movie was the most successful so far this year in Ireland, taking in  €1.02m within three days.

Brendan O’Carroll’s silver screen debut also becomes the third highest comedy opening of all time in Ireland after The Hangover 2, which grossed €1.19m, and Ted, which took €1.11m.

The film beat Michael Collins (1996), which earned €648,928 when it opened, and Angela's Ashes (1999), which made €641,292, to boast the biggest opening of all time for a local film.

David Burke, general manager at Universal Pictures, said that he was delighted with the figures.

“The numbers are spectacular. We're well ahead of any other title that has opened over the last number of weeks and that's really, really encouraging," he said.

“Based on the figures that we're seeing, there is no reason why Mrs Brown's Boys wouldn't surpass Michael Collins, Angela's Ashes, The Guard and The Wind that Shakes the Barley," said Mr Burke.

The figures represent 19.2pc of the Irish and UK box office total.

"Traditionally the box office in Ireland would be the equivalent of up to 10pc or 12pc of the UK, so to almost double your market share speaks volumes of the love that Irish audiences have for the character," said Mr Burke.

Fans of the popular Irish mammy Mrs Brown will also be able to see her on stage next year, when Mrs Brown’s Boys returns for a huge arena tour.
