BROADCASTING legend Mary Kennedy will receive the Irish Film and Television Academy’s (IFTA) Lifetime Achievement Award.
The popular presenter, who began her lengthy career in 1978 as a continuity announcer for RTÉ, is set to be presented with the honour later this month.
“I feel very privileged to have worked in Irish broadcasting for so many years and to have had the opportunity to showcase our rich culture, heritage and sense of community,” Kennedy said following the announcement.
“I feel honoured and very grateful that the Irish Film and Television Academy is presenting me with this prestigious award for that work.
“I will treasure it always. Míle buíochas.”
Kennedy will receive her award on November 20 at a special reception due to be held at Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel.
With a career spanning five decades, Kennedy has hosted a range of programmes, including Nationwide, Open House, Kennedy, Moving West, Up for the Match and the 1995 Eurovision Song Contest.
She currently co-hosts the hit podcast Changing Times - The Allenwood Conversations, with former President of Ireland Mary McAleese.
“Mary’s indelible relationship with Irish audiences has kept her firmly in the hearts and minds of the public throughout her career,” Áine Moriarty, Chief Executive of IFTA, said of their award recipient.
“A trailblazing woman in Irish broadcasting, she has a warmth, ease and professionalism that is wholly unique,” she added.
“The Irish Academy is immensely proud to recognise her outstanding achievement and present her with the IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award”.
Kennedy will receive her award following a fireside chat with broadcaster and fashion designer Brendan Courtney.
