Irish animation Song Of The Sea receives Oscar nomination

WITH a distinct lack of Irish names among the Oscar nominations announced today, all hopes are on an animated film based on the ancient Celtic myth of the selkie.

Song of The Sea is nominated in the Best Animated Feature Film category for the 2015 Academy Awards.

The tale of two children, Ben and Saoirse, who live in a lighthouse by the sea, is directed by Irish illustrator, comic artist and filmmaker Tomm Moore.

Moore is one half of the team that set up Cartoon Saloon, an animation studio and production company based in Kilkenny, which produced the animated fantasy film.

The production takes on How to Train Your Dragon 2, Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls and The Tale of Princess Kaguya in the animated category.

The winner will be announced at the 87th Academy Awards, which will be on held on February 22 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

How I Met Your Mother actor Neil Patrick Harris will host proceedings.
