In Pictures: U2's Innocence + Experience Tour kicks off in Vancouver

U2's Innocence + Experience tour kicked off in Vancouver last night, marking the first in a string of indoor arena gigs for the Irish rockers for the time in a decade.

The tour will feature material from the band's 13th album, Songs of Innocence released with much fanfare in September 2014.

The album stirred controversy when it was given away free and automatically added to the library of every iTunes user.

Bono later apologised for the move saying the motivation was a "drop of megalomania, a touch of generosity".

The Innocence + Experience Tour will see U2  visit 20 cities throughout North America and Europe in 2015.

The tour will feature "stages at each end of the venue connected by an extended third stage spanning the length of the arena" and"state of the art video and a radical new approach to surround sound. "

The tour itinerary will take the world's biggest band to North America until the end of July, then they hit Europe and the UK with September dates in Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and  October dates The O2 arena  in London.

"We are going to try to have a completely different feeling from night one to night two,”said Bono,“and have some fun playing with the idea of innocence and experience. More to be revealed!”

Special shows are being planned for Dublin for the end of next year to benefit the U2-initiated Music Generation project, but details are yet to be confirmed.
