Gleeson and Ronan to begin filming Colm Tóibín's Brooklyn in Ireland

SAOIRSE Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson are to begin filming on the movie adaptation of Colm Tóbín's acclaimed novel, Brooklyn, at the end of the month.

Gleeson and Ronan will shoot in Tóbín's native Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, with BAFTA-winning director John Crowley (Boy A, Intermission) directing an adapted script from Nick Hornby.

Tóbín's novel was first published in 2009 and centres on Eilis Lacey, a young Irish immigrant in 1950’s New York, whose relationship with Italian plumber Tony after a family tragedy sees her return to Ireland. Once home, Eilis fits back into her old life and soon finds her attraction for a charming local man called Jim growing.

Ronan will play Eilis, while Gleeson has been cast as Jim.  Emory Cohen will play Tony. Other cast members include: Julie Walters (Brave, Harry Potter) and Jim Broadbent (Gangs of New York, Cloud Atlas).

Around 70 locals are expected to feature in shooting a wedding scene and a dance in a local hall in Enniscorthy and Wexford.

The rest of the film will be shot in Dublin and Canada.

Brooklyn will be produced by Wildgaze Films and co–produced by Parallel Films.
