Game of Thrones: Winter arrives in first extended trailer for final season

GAME OF Thrones fans have been given a first proper look at the upcoming final season of the HBO fantasy series.

After months of anticipation and occasional teasers, HBO has released a full-length trailer for the eighth series of the hit show, which is returning on April 14th.

The two-minute preview poses more questions than answers, of course, but fans would probably have it no other way.

It begins with Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark, running through in a dark and mysterious setting before moving on to speak of the impending White Walkers invasion alongside their army of the dead.

"I know death. He's got many faces," Arya says. "I'm looking forward to seeing this one."

Several other characters are glimpses in the chaotic minutes that follow.

Ships, castles and vast armies feature prominently along with dragons, fire and bloodshed.

The most notable of these sneak peaks involves Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, played by Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke, preparing for battle at the Stark family stronghold.

Who will survive to sit on the Iron Throne? Will anyone survive?

Given Game of Thrones penchant for violent twists, you can guarantee there will be casualties with the makers of the series already promising major battles ahead.

The trailer has proved popular online, racking up more than 20 million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours.

Game of Thrones will return to HBO on April 14th, airing simultaneously on Sky Atlantic.
