A RADIO documentary produced by former Irish Post journalist Robert Mulhern scooped an industry award at a prestigious ceremony held in Scotland over the weekend.
Never Knocked Down, which Mulhern produced for RTÉ Radio 1’s Documentary on One series in 2014, told the story of Connemara-born boxer Sean Mannion.
From his humble beginnings in the West of Ireland, the Irish-speaking sportsman went on to become the top ranked Junior Middleweight in the world in the 1980s and even blazed a trail to a World Title shot in Madison Square Gardens in 1984.
Mulhern, who is currently working for BBC Radio Foyle in Derry, was in Inverness for the Celtic Media Awards on Friday, April 25.
There his documentary won the hotly-contested Radio Sports category, which boasted a total of ten nominees - including BBC Radio Wales Sport and John Beattie's Commonwealth Games programme, produced by BBC Radio Scotland.
Elsewhere during the ceremony, which took place at the One Touch Theatre venue in Inverness, Ireland’s hugely popular Love/Hate series took the Best Drama title – beating like the likes of Sherlock, a Welsh production, and Scotland’s detective series Shetland.
Scotland’s BBC Radio nan Gaidheal was named Radio Station of the Year at the event - which took place within the three-day Celtic Media Festival.
The Festival, which promotes “the languages and cultures of all Celtic nations”, has taken place annually for more than 30 years.
The 2016 event will be held in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford.
