Flood Aid: Daniel O’Donnell to hold one-off fundraising concert for Irish flood victims

DANIEL O’Donnell has organised a special benefit concert in aid of people in Donegal who were badly affected by torrential rain and flooding this month.

The Kincasslagh man will join a host of fellow country singers, including Nathan Carter, to perform at ‘Flood Aid for Inishowen’ in Letterkenny on Sunday.

It is estimated around 200 homes have been badly affected by the flood waters across O’Donnell’s native county.

Six main bridges and numerous stretches of road were also damaged after 63 per cent of August’s average rainfall fell within just nine hours.

Speaking on a video posted to his Facebook page, Mr O'Donnell said: "I'm sure like myself you are all shocked and horrified but thank God nobody lost their lives.

"As well as the money raised we hope that the people of Inishowen will derive some sort of comfort from this show of support and that their plight is being heard."

Soldiers from the Irish Defence Forces were deployed to north west Ireland last week to assist with the clean-up operation there.

More than 100 people were rescued from houses and cars in Donegal, Tyrone and Derry, while 47 families have registered as being displaced.

That includes 21 families in Burnfoot, 14 in Buncrana and the remainder in Muff, Malin, Clonmany and Carndonagh.

Temporary accommodation is being offered to a number of the families and further accommodation will be made available over the coming weeks.

O’Donnell, currently on a sell-out Irish tour, will perform at Flood Aid for Inishowen alongside Declan Nearney, Johnny Brady, Barry Kirwan, Nathan Carter and a number of other Irish acts.

All of the artists have offered their services free of charge. All proceeds, after costs, will go to the Red Cross.

The event will be held this Sunday, September 3, at the Aura Centre in Letterkenny. Tickets are available for €30 each from the venue and Ticketmaster.
