Father Ted star Ardal O’Hanlon to explore Ireland’s relationship with swearing in new documentary

IRELAND’S SPECIAL relationship with swear words is set to be examined in a new documentary fronted by Father Ted star Ardal O’Hanlon.

Holy F*** will see the Monaghan-born comedian and actor interviewing a string of famous faces about their mutual appreciation of bad language.

The documentary is due to air on RTE One at 9:30pm this coming Sunday, May 9 and sounds like essential viewing for fans of comedy and bad language.

In a preview released ahead of the broadcast, O’Hanlon can be seen rejoicing at Ireland’s love of all thing expletive.

“We curse a lot in the country,” he says.

“We swear casually and fluently, and with great relish. We love it.”

Pausing for a moment of contemplation, O’Hanlon asks: “Do we have a f***ing problem?”

A whole host of big names are set to appear on the show including Derry Girls star Tommy Tiernan, novelist Lisa McInerney and Boomtown Rats musician Bob Geldof.

Dr Emma Byrne, the author of the book Swearing is Good For You, also makes an appearance along with Irish Times journalist Frank McNally and drag performer and publican Rory O’Neill/Panti Bliss.

As an added bonus Irish language expert and writer Manchán Magan also makes an appearing, discussing swearing in Gaeilge.

O’Hanlon is certainly a great pick to front this kind of show given his experience as Father Dougal Maguire on Father Ted.

After all, late co-stars Dermot Morgan and Frank Kelly were known to utter the occasional expletive as Father Ted and Father Jack respectively on the series.

Holy F*** starts at 9.30pm on RTE One this Sunday.
