Enda Walsh brings Roald Dahl’s The Twits to life in ‘mischievous’ stage adaptation

HORRID husband and wife team, The Twits, the ghastly and wickedly funny creation of beloved children’s author Roald Dahl, are stepping off the page and onto the stage in a new production adapted by Dubliner Enda Walsh.

“Mischievously adapted” from Dahl’s comic story, Walsh’s “revolting” rendition of The Twits at the Royal Court Theatre stars Jason Watkins and Monica Dolan as Mr and Mrs Twit, Cait Davis as Monkey Mum and Glyn Pritchard as Monkey Father.

As fans of the book will know, the plot revolves are Mr and Mrs Twit, who are “are extremely nasty to each other” and “vile to everyone else”.

The Twits are so vile and mean they hold a family of monkeys hostage in a cage and force them to stand on their heads all the time. But the monkeys have a plan to teach the Twits a lesson, and so chaos ensues.

Enda Walsh is a hugely successful and critically lauded Irish playwright based in London.

His last play Ballyturk, starring Cillian Murphy, Sligo actor Mikel Murfi and Stephen Rea premiered at Galway Arts Festival last year before transferring to the National Theatre where it sold out a two month run.

Walsh also adapted John Carney’s Oscar winning low-budget hit film Once for the stage. The stage version of Once went onto to win eight Tony Awards.

Walsh’s breakout play was the cult hit Disco Pigs, later made into a film starring a young and unknown Cillian Murphy.

Alongside the play, Enda Walsh and director John Tiffany have created free writing workshops for children and their families.
