Derry taxi drivers to star in new BBC radio documentary

DERRY taxi drivers will be the stars of a new BBC radio documentary that aims to give listeners a colourful snapshot of the city.

The Derry Taxi Diaries follows journalist Robert Mulhern as he takes a six-month taxi ride through the city.

Along his journey he comes into contact with hitmen, adulterers and trips into the unknown in the dead of night.

“In Dublin it’s all fast-talking characters and foreign drivers fiddling about with Sat Nav. In New York - the home of the Yellow Taxi - the fare is nothing but a colourless transaction," says Mulhern.

“But in Derry or Londonderry, the drivers feel part of the fabric of the place and beat a pulse from the Cityside to the Waterside, joking, talking, commentating their way through a million journeys filled with tall tales.”

The Derry Taxi Diaries airs on BBC Radio Ulster at 1pm on Sunday, September 6 and will be repeated at 7.30pm on Thursday, September 11.
