Day Lewis leads Irish Oscars charge

Irish-based actor Daniel Day Lewis, cinematographer Seamus McGarvey and Irish animation Head Over Heels have each received Oscar nominations ahead of next month’s awards ceremony.

Day Lewis has today (January 10) been named in the Best Actor category for his work on Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, while Armagh-born McGarvey has received a nomination for his work on the Joe Wright period drama Anna Karenina, which stars Keira Knightley and Domhnall Gleeson.

Oscar nods for both come after they each also received a BAFTA nomination yesterday. McGarvey has also been nominated for an IFTA.

Head Over Heels, an animated short from Irish producer Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly, has been nominated in the Best Animated Short Film category. Cronin O’Reilly shares the nomination with director Timothy Reckart.

See this week's Irish Post (January 12 edition) for a feature on Head Over Heels.

Spielberg’s Lincoln dominated today’s nominations list, earning 12 in total.

Daniel Day Lewis is the 1/5 favourite to win his third Best Actor Oscar following wins for My Left Foot in 1989 and There Will Be Blood in 2007.

The Oscars will be held on February 24 and will be hosted by ‘Family Guy’ creator Seth MacFarlane.
