Dancers bring Irish culture to British viewers in impressive one-off BBC performance

A MANCHESTER-based Irish dance troupe brought the spirit of St Patrick to the whole of Britain over the weekend.

Members of the Reel Rhythms troupe of Irish musicians and dancers were featured on BBC Breakfast’s St Patrick’s Day broadcast, which aired across Britain on Saturday, March 17 from Media City in Manchester.

Performers who featured on the show included Katie Gibbons and Jasmine Hill, who were accompanied by musicians Ciara and Catherine McGoldrick - who are nieces of Irish musician Mike McGoldrick - and Emily Shields.

The Reel Rhythms troupe, who all have Co. Mayo roots, are connected to the Mayo Manchester organisation, which promotes the annual Mayo Day event in Britain and Ireland, among others.

Tony Hennigan, from Mayo Manchester, said: “We were delighted to receive a request from the BBC to ask us to feature some of our performers who were taking part in our Mayo Day promotion during the Manchester Irish Festival.

“It was great to see the green and red broadcast to the nation on St Patrick’s Day - even the presenters joined in the fun.”
