DUBLIN comic Jason Byrne has started filming Father Figure, a new BBC One sitcom written by and starring the stand-up.
The six-part comedy, adapted from a BBC Radio 2 series of the same name, sees Byrne play Tom Whyte, a stay-at-home father with two sons.
Byrne, a Perrier Newcomer Award nominee whose television credits include Live At The Apollo and RTE 2’s Anonymous, said: “The show is an eclectic mix of characters who are all based on my friends and family, and many of the things that happen to the Whyte family are drawn from my own experiences.”
Pauline McLynn, best known for her role as Mrs Doyle in Father Ted, heads a trio of Irish actors which includes actor Dermot Crowley (Bleak House) and comedian Michael Smiley (Luther, Utopia).
The new series is set in Borehamwood in Hertfordshire and filming is currently taking place at the nearby Elstree Film and Television Studios.
Members of the public can apply for free tickets to be part of the live audience for the show, which is being filmed until July 11.
Byrne is set to embark on a British tour this Autumn with his new show Jason Byrne’s Special Eye.
