BAFTA winners announced at starry London ceremony

THE winners of The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) were announced last night in London at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. 

Irish success' included an award for acclaimed Irish actor Stephen Rea and BAFTA host Graham Norton.

Stephen Rea took the Supporting Actor award for his role in the tense political thriller The Honourable Woman.

The ceremony was hosted by Graham Norton. Other presenters included Irish comic actor Chris O’Dowd along with familiar faces from TV Maisie Williams, David Harewood, Jason Isaacs, Anna Friel, Tess Daly and Steve Coogan.

There were big wins on the night for Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, and actress Georgina Campbell, who won the Leading Actress award for her role as a victim of domestic abuse in the BBC Three drama, Murdered by My Boyfriend.

The BAFTA for Comedy and Comedy Entertainment Programme was awarded to The Graham Norton Show. Host Norton, who was already on stage joked it would be quicker if he won all the awards.

In the International category, the BAFTA was awarded to True Detective, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two Louisiana detectives in their 17-year pursuit of a brutal killer. Colin Farrell will star in the anticipated second series.

The ceremony included a moving tribute to critic and broadcaster Clive James.

The Special Award in honour of Alan Clarke was presented to Jeff Pope, one of the UK’s foremost producers and writers whose career who has been BAFTA nominated nine times (including a nomination for Philomena, the story of Irish women Philomena Lee).
