New website allows Irish authors to sell directly to readers

A NEW business established by a Sligo-based author provides a platform for Irish writers to sell their books directly to readers.

Buy the Book, which was launched by Rachel Drury earlier this year, is Ireland's first online marketplace for Irish authors.

“It is bookselling with a difference” Ms Drury told The Irish Post.

“The author is responsible for selling their own book and shipping it directly to their customer,” she explained.

“When a customer buys a book from us, they support our Irish authors directly.”

There are additional benefits for authors who join Buy the Book, too, the entrepreneur confirms, explaining: “It is also a growing author community where authors meet and discuss ideas and support each other in selling and marketing their books.”

There are also monthly member calls and workshops for authors to participate in.

Ms Drury is passionate about the business as, after publishing her own book earlier this year, she found that it was easier to work in conjunction with other authors than to go it alone.

“It is important to sell your book, but it is also important to feel supported in that process and to enjoy yourself along the way,” she explained.

“I was passionate about setting up an author community as much as the marketplace”

Newly launched, Buy the Book is now focusing its energies on reaching out to the upcoming Christmas market – hoping to attract those looking for an alternative Irish marketplace in order to shop local this Christmas, and also those who wish to support Irish authors directly.

There will be Christmas gifts available through the website, and customers can also request an author-signed copy of any book they buy when making their purchase.
