A UNITED IRELAND referendum in the next few years remains a real possibility.
Politicians on all sides are open to discuss the notion of unifying the North and the South, but opinions on the benefits of a United Ireland are split.
One major ramification of a successful Irish unity vote is that Ireland's flag and national anthem may have to change.
Earlier this month, the Irish Sun asked members of the Oireachtas whether they'd be open to the idea changing Ireland's flag, with 25% of them saying they'd be outright opposed to the move.
In response to the news, we took the debate to our readers, asking them whether they'd be open to changing Ireland's tricolour in the event Irish unity is achieved.
Nearly two-thirds (63%) of respondents said 'no'.
While a referendum is still a long way away, and the notion that Ireland would have to give up its flag is purely hypothetical, a number flag designs have been thrown up on social media, which could be used for a United Ireland.

If we're doing Newgrange, a design like this could represent the moment of solstice when the light enters the chamber - an ancient symbol of new beginnings pic.twitter.com/xIR2dt6LZi

No one has suggested the use of a shamrock yet. This is an all-island symbol, it's associated with the Irish Guards for example pic.twitter.com/SApvvZvlsN
