TIM KELLY has been announced as the 2019 Outstanding Contribution to Business Award winner ahead of The Irish Post Awards this week.
The Irish businessman will be honoured on the night when live coverage of the Awards kicks off on TG4 this Thursday, November 14 at 9.30pm.
Born in Frosses, Co. Donegal, Kelly Group Chairman Timothy “Tim” Kelly left school at the age of 16 and found work in hotels and construction before finding his niche in the cabling industry.
Having moved to London with his brother, it was 1985 when he first set up Kelly Communications to target the unique business opportunities in the emerging UK cable television market.
The firm was awarded its first major contract by Croydon Cable, which included the very first cable television customer installation on September 17, 1985. This landmark achievement was the stimulus for the remarkable future success of the company – which developed a solid reputation for providing a high quality of service.
It was that reputation that ensured Tim’s firm a place in the industry. It soon won further installation contracts across the UK and by 1987 turnover for Kelly Communications Ltd exceeded £1million for the first time.
That increased to £10million in 1994 and had exceeded £100million in 2012.
Since then the multiple award-winning company, headquartered in Wembley, north London, has continued to grow, counting the likes of London Underground, Network Rail Siemens, Vodaphone and Virgin Media among their bulging book of clients.
And Tim, who is now in place as Chairman, continues to oversee the business while also dedicating time to supporting the Irish community in Britain and many other
good causes.
One of his recent projects was The London Irish Appeal, a campaign led by Tim to raise the money to establish a new London Irish Ward at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore.
Backed by many leading Irish business figures in London, that campaign raised £700,000 and came to a close in February of this year, when the ward was officially opened.
