Streaming movies on tablets to be tested on-board Ryanair flights

STREAMING movies and TV shows on mobile devices during flights is a service that Ryanair passengers will be welcoming this summer.

The airline is planning to trial the on-board service that is likely to be free for customers and will be funded by advertising, according to Ryanair Chief Technology Officer John Hurley.

"It's aimed at passengers on flights of more than two or three hours," he said.

However, he explained full internet access is not something that the firm would be looking to provide to passengers.

"It would increase the drag of our aircraft by 2%, which equates to 20 million euros [$23.6m; £15.5m] in extra fuel," he added.

Passengers will be required to use their own devices, however, to watch the shows or films, as Ryanair is not planning to introduce screens on the back of seats.

The streaming service will not enable passengers to browse the web.

It is likely to be trialled on several holiday routes this summer, and if it proves to be popular amongst customers then it could be installed across the airline’s 300 aircraft.

A wifi service will also be trialled later this year. It will probably be introduced on routes predominantly used by business travellers.

The pricing structure for passengers is not yet clear.
