Sir Peter Sutherland to retire from Goldman Sachs role after 20 years

AFTER more than 20 years at the head of Goldman Sachs, Sir Peter Sutherland will retire from the role next month.

The Irish business mogul and former Attorney General of Ireland announced this week his intention to retire as Chairman of Goldman Sachs International (GSI) at the end of June.

He made the decision in order to “devote more time to his role as the special representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Migration and Development” Goldman Sachs confirmed in a statement released yesterday.

A barrister by trade, Mr Sutherland joined Goldman Sachs as an international advisor in 1990 and became chairman of GSI in 1995.

“Peter has led the evolution of GSI into an important contributor to the firm’s global growth,” the company said.

“His strong leadership, deep understanding of our business and culture, and independent and wise judgment have benefitted the firm enormously,” they added.

“Upon his retirement as chairman of GSI, Peter will continue to provide strategic advice to the firm on global business development opportunities as an international advisor.”

Mr Sutherland, who was born in Foxrock in Co. Dublin, has also previously been the Chairman of BP plc, director general of the World Trade Organization and was Chairman of the London School of Economics from 2008 to January 2015.

In 2004 he received an honorary British knighthood, being made a Knight Commander of the order of St Michael and St George (KCMG).

Last week he placed fourteenth in a top 100 Catholic power list released by The Tablet.
