Primark clothes to be sold online

PRIMARK is now selling clothing online for the first time.

The retailer, which first opened in Dublin in 1969 where it operates as Penneys, has launched a partnership with the fashion website ASOS.

Primark has so far avoided investing in any online ventures, focusing instead on expanding its presence on the high street.

But it has now announced it will sell a limited number of items during a trial period ASOS.

An initial collection of 20 items, ranging from £6 to £22, have gone on sale.

ASOS, which is an online-only fashion group, sells own-label and high street brands targeting teens to twentysomethings. It said Primark formed “a part of that mix”.

The trial is expected to last a few months and include both menswear and womenswear.

Primark, part of Associated British Foods, has around 260 stores in Britain and Europe and recently expanded into France.

The chain reported a 24 per cent rise in sales to £2billion in the six months to March 2.

Primark began trading in Britain with four out-of-town stores in 1973.

The following year saw the opening of the first British high street stores in Derby and Bristol.
