THE Irish Government is reaching out to young Irish professionals in Britain as part of a bid to create thousands of new jobs in the finance sector over the next five years.
Ireland’s Minister for State for International Banking met with members of the London Irish Business Network (LIBS) to discuss the Government’s IFS2020 jobs creation strategy.
Simon Harris TD was among a panel of guest speakers at the latest LIBS gathering, Ireland and the City: A Key Connection, which was hosted at the Irish Embassy.
Aimed at further developing the Irish relationship with London’s City district, Mr Harris said: “The LIBS event and the society more generally, provides excellent insight into Ireland’s place and positioning in the financial services world.”
He added: “It is an important link and resource for Government in taking the pulse of this most vibrant and informed of Irish communities.”
The Irish Government has pledged to deliver over 10,000 new jobs in the international financial services sector by 2020 as part of IFS2020.
Ireland’s International Financial Services Centre launched in Dublin in 1987 employing less than 60 people but has since grown to employ over 35,000 people across Ireland.
Its success has been credited to ‘the strong relationship’ with Britain, its closest trading partner.
The City of London is also seen as having been of ‘vital importance’.
“Over the past 18 to 24 months, LIBS has been working closely with the Department of Finance, Enterprise
Ireland and the Embassy to connect and engage with the professional Irish community here in London with the aim of promoting the development of the financial services industry,” said LIBS board member Shane Kelly.
“Engagement with networks such as LIBS is highlighted as a key tool in realising Minister Harris’ ambitious IFS 2020 strategy, and we look forward to continuing to support the Department in its implementation.”
Joining Minister Harris — Ireland’s first Minister of State with specific responsibility for international financial services to be appointed in 20 years — on the panel was Susan Dargan, Executive Vice President, State Street and Vincent Keaveny, Partner, Baker McKenzie and Alderman, City of London Corporation.
The evening was sponsored by Morgan McKinley, Pcubed and Enterprise Ireland.
