LAING O’Rourke’s £420m Royal Sussex County Hospital reconstruction project in Brighton has been approved by the British Government.
The work, which will include demolishing the old Victorian hospital, will begin autumn 2015 and be completed by 2024.
Laing O’Rourke has been on board as main contractor since 2009.
Chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne said: “I am delighted that we have been able to green light the investment for the much needed redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County hospital.
"This is great news for Brighton and the whole local community. Bringing the buildings and facilities of this venerated hospital up to modern standards will enhance and improve patients’ care and experience.”
Laing O’Rourke is also involved in a healthcare scheme in Cambridge, where the company will build a £120m private hospital-led, mixed-use scheme next to the city’s Addenbrooke’s Hospital site.
The development will comprise a new post-graduate medical education centre, a 75-bed private hospital for Ramsey Healthcare and a 200-bed Crown Plaza hotel and conference centre.
Laing O’Rourke was founded by Ray O’Rourke in 1978 - he remains the CEO.
Des O’Rourke is the chairman, and Cathal O’Rourke heads up the Australian hub as managing director. It is the largest privately owned construction company in Britain.
Significant projects have included Heathrow Terminal 5, various Canary Wharf developments, and the Centre Hospitalier De L’université De Montréal, Montréal, Canada.
