IRISH people worldwide will now be able to adopt a new distinctive web address, following the launch of .irish.
Creators of the domain are aiming to boost global marketing opportunities by allowing products and services to be identifiable with the word ‘Irish’.
The domain was introduced on St Patrick’s Day but will now be launched over several months to allow trademark owners and the business community to register. This initial ‘sunrise’ phase will run until May 16, ahead of general availability on June 25. From May 21 – June 20 the general public will have the opportunity to obtain high value domain names that are not trademarks.
The new web address is aimed at the global Irish community, including individuals and businesses, brands and organisations. Domains can be registered for a period of one to 10 years.
Dot-Irish LLC, who have teams in both Ireland and the US, will operate the domain by ICANN — the Internet Coporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. Dot-Irish LLC’s shareholders have backgrounds in sectors including, technology start-ups, financial services, the domain industry, international philanthropy and media.
A limited number of .irish domains are currently available ahead of general release through an exclusive Founders Program — see www.nic.irish for details.
