CityJet to launch new route from Cork to London City Airport

CITYJET is set to announce a new route between Cork Airport and London City Airport in a huge boost for the economy in Cork.

The particular details on landing slots, flight frequency and ticket prices are yet to be confirmed but the deal is expected to be announced next week, according to the Irish Examiner.

The route will mainly serve business customers with London City Airport based in the prestigious London financial district.

JetMagic served London City Airport from Cork in 2003 before the company folded, and so news of the route being re-opened will be a boost to business in the south of Ireland.

The news of the route, which is expected to commence in September, bucks the recent trend in Leeside as Cork Airport faced the threat of losing its 'second busiest airport in Ireland' to Shannon Airport.

Ryanair moved many of its services out of Cork to Shannon over the last 18 months Shannon leaving its passenger footfall just 20,000 behind Cork Airport.

Just weeks ago it was announced that Czech Airlines had axed the proposed Cork-Prague route as well as the Cork-Ibiza route.

Cork Airport already serves London through flights to Heathrow with Aer Lingus as well as Stanstead and Gatwick through Ryanair.

When contacted by The Irish Post today, Cityjet said it was unable to comment.
