Cancer-stricken author backs TanOrganic brand's Waitrose campaign

 

AN IRISH author who has been hit with cancer nine times is backing a fundraising campaign launched by the TanOrganic self-tan brand in Britain this week.

As the Irish firm launched its first range at new stockists Waitrose, Dublin writer Emma Hannigan lent her support to help raise money for cancer research.

A self-confessed fan of the TanOrganic range, which was founded by Co. Kildare born entrepreneur Noelle O’Connor, Ms Hannigan explained: “Going through cancer treatment can leave you feeling utterly horrific.  Not only do you suffer the internal physical effects of these aggressive treatments, but also external physical side effects such as hair loss and a rather unattractive blue tinge to the skin.”

She added: “Making yourself feel attractive can be difficult, but can also make you feel better in yourself. That’s why I love TanOrganic.”

The Dubliner, author of The Summer Guest and Talk to the Headscarf, learnt she carried the BRCA1 ‘Breast cancer’ gene when she was just 32.

She quickly made the decision to have both breasts and her ovaries removed to reduce her heightened risk of developing cancer, but has since been diagnosed with the disease nine times.

Although currently undergoing her ninth round of treatment, Ms Hannigan claims TanOrganic’s “eco-certified” properties mean she can continue to use the fake tan range.

“When going through treatment, you are limited to what beauty products you can use, as many contain carcinogens and can be harmful,” she explained.

“But TanOrganic, being 100% natural and organic, is one of the best brands I’ve used over the years as it’s safe and effective,” she added.

“So I can get a lovely golden glow and cover up that horrible blue tinge. One step closer to ‘normal’ me.”

Following this month’s British launch, 35 pence from every bottle of TanOrganic product sold in the 115 Waitrose stores now stocking the brand will be donated to cancer research charities.

Noelle O’Connor, Founder of TanOrganic, added: “When I met Emma, I was immediately inspired by her story – she has overcome cancer so many times and yet remains so positive about life. So I am delighted that Emma is on board with the TanOrganic campaign to raise awareness and money for cancer research, without which Emma may not be here with us today.”

She added: “I am an avid supporter of organic products and I’m thrilled to know that TanOrganic products have helped Emma and others going through cancer treatment feel a bit more like themselves again.”
